Here at Denny’s Auto Inc, we will be among the first to tell you that regular oil changes are one of the most efficient and cost-effective ways to maintain your vehicle. The oil in your engine is the lifeblood of your vehicle. Oil helps to lubricate, protect and clean the moving components in your engine compartment.
Without motor oil, there are parts of your engine that would make metal to metal contact which can cause a great deal of friction and heat. Heat can be your car, truck or SUV’s worst nightmare as it often causes damage to metal components and can lead to more involved and costly repairs. The health of your oil can also serve as an early indication of other issues your vehicle may be experiencing.
It is a good idea to check your oil level. This will allow you to notice if your vehicle has a major oil leak which should be addressed. Checking your oil levels also gives you a chance to look at the color and consistency of your oil. If your motor oil is dark, it could mean that it is getting burnt, if your oil is milky white it could indicate that water or coolant is getting mixed into your oil. Another obvious symptom is if you notice that your oil is gritty, this could indicate that your oil filter has become saturated.
As mentioned above, one of the key functions of your motor oil is to keep your engine clean. Your oil is aided in this function by your oil filter. Motor oil circulates throughout your engine picking up harmful debris and contaminants. The oil then eventually deposits the debris in the oil filter as it passes through. Once your oil filter becomes overly full of contaminants it can no longer effectively filter anything out and debris is recirculated throughout your engine.
Needless to say, it is not a great idea to skip or prolong oil changes, but be sure to check your owner’s manual for factory recommendation on service intervals. You may be surprised by the answer as most modern vehicles can now go longer than 3 months or 3,000 miles between oil changes. It is important to keep in mind that factory recommendations are based on ideal driving conditions. If you’ve lost your owner’s manual don’t panic, after getting to know your driving habits and the current condition of your vehicle, we will be happy to suggest a maintenance schedule that works for both you and your vehicle.
